2009 Fiesta Bowl:
Ohio State vs Texas

Sponsored currently by Tostitos Tortilla Chips, the Fiesta Bowl is one of US college football events. Initially, it was hosted in Arizona at Sun Devil Stadium, all the way until 2006. It was in 1998 that this bowl became a part of the BCS. It came about due to the Western Athletic Conference’s failed attempts to get invitations for their top athletes. In two straight years (from 1968 to 1969), champions Arizona State and Wyoming did not get any bowl selection, and, a year after that, Arizona again was embarrassed. They failed to receive an invite from a major bowl.

In 1971, the inaugural game showcased an Arizona team versus a Florida State squad. In 1975, both Nebraska team tickets and Arizona State tickets sold by the multitudes, as these two squads faced off. The Fiesta Bowl’s popularity rose as the years went by. Since 1981, Fiesta Bowl began happening on New Year’s Day, along with other bowl contests.

It was in 1986 that a momentous development happened in the history of the Fiesta Bowl. The top two teams in the US, Penn State aned Miami, played for the defacto championship. During that time, the Big 4 bowls (Rose, Sugar, Orange, Cotton) all had contracts with conferences. Owing to this development, the 1987 Fiesta Bowl enticed the biggest TV audience of any college football game at that time. A couple of years after that, Notre Dame went against West Virginia for the national finals. Last year, the event happened at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona. As per the BCS agreements, the event would host the Big 12 Conference except if the teams are part of the BCS National Championship.
